Earlier this month, our m4h team conducted a five-day Experience-Based Knowledge Sharing and Experiential Learning (EKSEL) workshop to prepare partner organisations to effectively implement the Generation Dialogue approach in Somalia and Sudan. The workshop brought together representatives from different ministries, GIZ, the Norwegian Church Aid, , the Elman Peace Center and who actively participated in the immersive learning experience.
What makes the EKSEL approach unique? 🤔
EKSEL workshops go beyond traditional Training of Trainers approaches. They create a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Through role-plays and reflective discussions, participants directly engaged with the Generation Dialogue approach, gain practical experience and insights into how to implement the process step-by-step in their own communities.
What is unique about the Generation Dialogue approach? 🗣️
The Generation Dialogue is different from traditional behaviour change communication approaches. It creates space for community members from different generations and sexes to share their beliefs and values, without fear of judgement. It encourages respectful listening – first by facilitators and then by one another – allowing them to voice their doubts, dilemmas, and thoughts on how to adapt or challenge harmful traditions at their own pace.
What’s next? 📅
More EKSEL workshops are planned for this year, and implementation of the approach will take place in Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan on behalf of GIZ for the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Project.
The project aims to contribute to a reduction in the prevalence of FGM and other forms of gender-based violence by building institutional capacity, strengthen collaboration, and driving community-level social norm change.
We are looking forward to building on the momentum of this workshop and working hand-in-hand with our partners to ensure sustainable impact across the region. 🤝
