We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the EU-funded project, “Technical Assistance to Develop a Health Insurance Information System Platform for the Ethiopian Health Insurance Service (EHIS).” This achievement represents a significant milestone in advancing Ethiopia’s health insurance ecosystem.
The final workshop brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia, the Ministry of Finance, the Ethiopian Health Insurance Service, the Ministry of Health, GIZ, and dedicated project team members. Their collaboration and commitment were instrumental in achieving this success.
Highlights of the Workshop
The workshop served as a critical platform for:
- Presenting Project Outcomes
- Sharing Lessons Learned
- Charting the Path Forward
Highlights of the Project
- The CBHI platform’s successful pilot across over 150 woredas is a significant step forward in the digital management of health insurance.
- Over 2,000 enrollers and claim managers were trained, contributing to the operational success and sustainability of the Ethiopian National Health Insurance system.
- Challenges such as the lack of integration between CBHI and Social Health Insurance (SHI) systems were highlighted, emphasizing the need for a unified platform that supports both schemes.
- Discussions underscored the importance of integrating CBHI and SHI platforms with hospital systems, regional health bureaus, and payment platforms to enhance service delivery.
Lessons for the Future
The project’s outcomes underline the critical role of:
- Addressing inconsistencies in data collection and reporting to improve monitoring and intervention strategies.
- Developing a comprehensive interoperable platform and system to manage CBHI and SHI collectively, ensuring scalability and sustainability.
- Capacity development and local expertise are vital to maintaining the momentum achieved during the project.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, partners, and stakeholders who contributed to this journey. Your insights, dedication, and collaboration were the driving forces behind the project’s success.
As we close this chapter, we look forward to the lasting impact of this initiative in shaping a equitable health insurance framework in Ethiopia. Together, we are advancing the vision of Universal Health Coverage.
