On September 9th, a DG Murray Trust (DGMT)–m4h team visited Reed Street Clinic in the Cape Town area to get an impression of the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination campaign in South Africa.
The German Bilateral Cooperation through KfW Development Bank has committed funds to support the vaccination efforts of the Republic of South Africa on two ends. A large portion of the funds are used to procure cold chain equipment such as vaccination fridges, cold boxes, and temperature monitoring devices. Since no large-scale vaccination campaign can function without proper data infrastructure, the German contribution is also used to finance IT devices to run and apply the South African Electronic Vaccination Database System (EVDC) efficiently. Roughly 3,200 laptops and tablets have been distributed throughout South Africa already.
The Project-Executing Agency is the DG Murray Trust (DGMT) a long-standing South African NGO that is committed to improve public health, amongst other topics, in the country. m4h supports DGMT in the procurement and financial administration of the KfW-provided funds.
At Reed Street Clinic, Demi (see picture) is a COVID Vaccination Ambassador trying to identify and motivate unvaccinated citizens to get their shots. On the day of our visit, she was already successful. For her task, she carries the tablet procured and distributed by DGMT to check whether visitors of the health centre are already vaccinated – the Identity Document number is used as a unique identifier.
During the vaccination, the complete data of the patients are captured through the laptop while the patient is educated, and the anamnesis is conducted.
