From June 13 to 18 2022, under the Maternal and Child Health Program IV-V Perinatal Centre Bishkek, with the technical and financial support of the project “Perinatal Centre Bishkek – Accompanying Activities”, a delegation from Kyrgyzstan conducted a study visit to the Perinatal Center in Friedrichshafen (Germany) to exchange experiences. The delegation was composed of the heads of the departments of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, First Deputy MHIF, Director of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, and chief physicians of regional hospitals in Osh and Talas.

At the invitation of Dr. Hans-Walter Vollert, chief physician of the Clinic for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Friedrichshafen Clinic, the team learned about interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration between obstetricians and gynaecologists, neonatologists, midwives, and neonatal nurses. The delegation members were introduced to the specifics of the referral and transport system, business and financial planning, and the concept of maintenance in a tertiary care facility. They also discussed possibilities for applying the know-how in Kyrgyzstan.

During the visit, Dr. Joachim Schüürmann, Medical Advisor of the German Development Bank KfW, met with the Kyrgyz delegation and said the following about the expected impact of the visit: “It is important for us that this visit brings something for the benefit of the future work of the first modern Perinatal Centre in the Central Asian region. When the Perinatal Centre in Bishkek opens and becomes operational, it can serve as a model for two more such centres in Osh and Talas.”
